Isobutane is a colorless flammable gas at room temperature and pressure. Melting point - 159.4 ℃, Boiling point 11.73 ℃. Slightly soluble in water, soluble in ethanol, ether, etc. With the air to form an explosive mixture, the explosion limit is 1.9% ~ 8.4% (volume), its vapor is heavier than air, can be diffused to a considerable distance in a lower place, in case of fire source will catch fire and burn back. It mainly exists in natural gas, refinery gas and cracked gas. It can be obtained from physical separation and can also be prepared from N-butane by isomerization. It is mainly used for alkylation with isobutene to produce isooctane, as gasoline octane number improver. It can also be used as a refrigerant.

2、Main source
(1) Found in liquefied petroleum gas, natural gas, and cracked gas. It is obtained by separation of C4 during petroleum cracking.
(2) Taking industrial isobutane as raw material (content of 82% ~ 91%), three-stage adsorption process is adopted. The primary adsorber removes impurities such as C2, C3, n-butane and 1-butene, the secondary adsorber removes isobutene, and the C2, C3 hydrocarbon impurities are further removed in the tertiary adsorber, and the purity of the product is greater than 99.99%.
(3) By natural gas fractionation with surfactant adsorption or freezing.
3、Main application
(1) It is mainly used for the production of iso-octane by alkylation with isobutene, and used as an octane number improver for gasoline. Isobutylene and propylene can be prepared by cracking. Alkylated gasoline can be made by alkylation with n-butene and propylene. Methacrylic acid, acetone and methanol can be prepared. It can also be used as a refrigerant.
(2) High purity isobutane is mainly used as standard gas and preparation of special standard mixture.
(3) Used for the synthesis of iso-octane, as gasoline octane number improer, used for iso-butene, propylene, methacrylic acid, used as refrigerant, etc.
