Physical properties:

In general, ethylene is a colorless slightly odorous gas with a density of 1.256g/L, slightly less dense than air. It is insoluble in water and soluble in organic solvents such as carbon tetrachloride.

Appearance and properties: colorless gas, slightly peculiar smell of hydrocarbons. A small amount of ethylene has a faint sweetness.

Absorption peak: The absorption zone is in the far ultraviolet region.

Solubility: Insoluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol, ketone, benzene, soluble in ether. Soluble in organic solvents such as carbon tetrachloride.

Industrial sectorsEthylene effect:

Application: manufacture of plastics, synthetic ethanol, acetaldehyde, synthetic fiber and other important raw materials

Ecological field

Triple response of ethylene:

(1) inhibiting stem elongation and growth;

(2) promote the thickening of stem and root;

(3) to promote the lateral growth of the stem. Treating the yellowing seedling stem with ethylene can make the stem thickened and the petiole grow upward.

The agricultural field

Ethylene is an endogenous plant hormone produced by all parts of higher plants, such as leaves, stems, roots, flowers, fruits, tubers, seeds, and seedlings, under certain conditions. It is the smallest molecule in plant hormones, and its physiological function is mainly to promote fruit and cell expansion. The ripening of seeds can promote the shedding of leaves, flowers and fruits, induce the differentiation of flower buds, break dormancy, promote germination, inhibit flowering, organ shedding, dwarf plants and promote the generation of adventitious roots.
